When and Where We Meet

Music came to Coolum Men’s Shed in 2020 when Rosco E Baldwin and Doug Harbrow sought to use the Community Centre Building for that purpose. The proposal was supported by the Management Team of the Men’s Shed. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are allocated meeting times, other than when the building is required for meetings, seminars, or other purposes.

Musicians of any level of competency (and non-musicians too), are welcome to come along and see if there is something for them. Currently we have mainly guitar players, but instruments of all kinds are very welcome.

The Community Centre Building offers a very large central room which is air conditioned. A smaller “Music room” is allocated specifically for the Music Group and this is used for smaller group performances and equipment storage.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN KNOWING MORE OR WOULD LIKE TO COME ALONG AS A VISITOR, PLEASE EITHER COME ALONG TO THE SHED ON A FRIDAY MORNING OR CONTACT DOUG HARBROW ON 0407 040 938.

Activities

Music Group Members have performed at occasional Men’s Shed events and the intention is that this will increase.

Music practice sessions are held regularly. Currently two main groups meet - a rhythm and blues group, and a jazz group. Depending on demand, tutorials on instrument restringing, looper pedals, and other electronic devices can be held. Some Men’s Shed members have gone to the workshop and made instruments themselves. Recording is to be established in the smaller Music Room some time in 2023. At this stage the Music Group is not offering classes for learners, but this might change.

SHEDGROOVES

"SHEDGROOVES" meets in the main room of the Community Centre from about 9:00 am to 11:30 EVERY FRIDAY. Music played covers the 1950s through to modern times. Interesting pieces are chosen, and emphasis placed on vocal harmonies and “light and shade”. Contact Bob BARFOOD on 0407 895 011.

ShedJazz

In 2022 Ian Goater formed ‘ShedJazz’. This is a Jazz Musician’s fellowship group and meets on Monday afternoons. It is a joint project of the Coolum Men’s and Women’s Sheds and is open to men and women. Participants are mostly working or retired musicians.

Monday afternoon is essentially a Jam Session concentrating on swing and Latin standards from ‘the Great American Songbook’. Improvisation is a mainstay of the session.  Experience is required, no tuition is provided. Contact Ian Goater 0428 598 465.
